Pit to Port Project - October 2005 |
||
![]() |
The project has
commenced with a visit to the Bodmin and Wenford Railway by a group from Poltair
School. The students were given a guided tour of the workshop and shed and
participated in raising steam and preparing Judy’s running mate, Alfred. On the
following weekend work on the repairs started with stripping of components and
fixings in order to allow the removal of the saddle tank and boiler.

On the 20th of October the CSLPS steam crane was used to lift these off the frames. The boiler has been placed in the covered workshop area and removal of the tubes is in progress whilst the saddle tank has been stored until it will be used as a pattern for a replacement in stainless steel.
Anyone interested is welcome to visit and you are also encouraged to become a volunteer worker either with the locomotive repairs or by assisting with research work into the role of the railways in developing the china clay industry

......then the cab .... - (this is a very small locomotive)
and finally the boiler
The boiler was then moved under cover to the workshop where it was jacked up to permit access to the smokebox and firebox..

Right - This is a view of the smokebox tubeplate after work to remove the tubes has started.
The traditional method would have been to use a tube extractor to pull out one tube at a time. Nowadays oxy acetylene equipment makes a quicker job provided that skill and care is exercised.
